Chicken Masks, Late Goals & Pep’s Party…
Once upon a sunshine-flooded May day of 2018, Manchester City fans flocked to Southampton, not unlike football’s most enthusiastic penguins, to witness what would soon be written in the annals of absurdity—an awe-inspiring, feather-flapping, 100-point triumph! Pep Guardiola’s city slickers sauntered into St Mary’s like a band of heroic caricatures, with positions shuffled so much, they’d make a deck of cards dizzy. A game of chances was not the menu of the day, but a single heart-stopping spectacle was served fresh in the dying seconds!
As entertainment on the pitch ticked on like a watch with a flat battery, City supporters took matters into their own hands—or should we say, masks? A mysterious, sweat-soaked rubber chicken mask became the crown of glory passed among fans, as they guzzled pints and strutted in the stands like comedy kings. As the sun shone and beer flowed, they experienced a bash and crash into the comedic wonderland, forgetting the woes of goal droughts!
The climax: Kevin De Bruyne hoisted the ball as if launching a space mission and Gabriel Jesus played the role of cosmic cowboy, looping the ball gently over a baffled goalie into the back of the net! Pandemonium erupted in a technicolor explosion more vibrant than a peacock parade. Celebratory pitch invasions ensued, boots flew, and the echoes of that day continue to squawk in the hearts of Citizens—forever etched as the match where history was not only made, but also accessorized with a snazzy chicken mask!
